Some reports suggest that both the expressed
and distilled oils are phototoxic; other studies indicate otherwise. It
appears that the oil extracted from the bitter orange (C.aurantium var.
amara) is much more likely to provoke phototoxicity. Nevertheless, it is
advisable to err on the side of caution by avoiding skin applications of
sweet orange oil shortly before exposure to natural or simulated sunlight.
Certainly, the oil can irritate sensitive skin, especially if used in concentrations
above 1 per cent. The potential of all citrus oils to cause skin irritation
and sensitization increases once the oil begins to oxidize, Orange essence
deteriorates very quickly, so it is best to use it within six months of
opening the bottle. |
