Certain Furocoumarins, notaldy bergapten, have
been found to be photataxic on human skin which cause sensitiation and skin
pigmentation when exposed to direct sunlight. Otherwise non-toxic and relativdy
non-irritant. |

Expressed bergamot oil is phototoxic because
it contains high levels of furocomarins, It should never be applied to skin
shortly before exposure to natural or simulated sunlight. Aromatherapists
are increasingly using the rectified version known as bergamot FCF (furocourmarinfree),
which is non-phototoxic. It is also free of other non-volatile substances,
such as waxes, which can irritate sensitive skin. |
